Bake Sale on Valentine's Weekend

Whether it's something for your sweetie or just to indulge yourself please visit Koda’s Playground Pet Supply Store on Valentine's Weekend (Feb 11 and 12) from 10-3 each day for our Valentine's Bake Sale.

Koda's is located at 305 Broad Street, Milford, PA between the Golden Fish Gallery and the Milford Diner.

If you would like to donate home baked goodies please call Phyllis Simpson at 296-2880 or email at psimpson@ptd.net.

We request that donated baked goods be delivered to Koda’s Playground between 11am and noon, labeled to identify the donated items. Thank you.

We have recently seen a large upsurge in bounced and canceled checks so unfortunately we can longer accept checks as payments under certain circumstances.

Effective Immediately we will no longer accept checks as payment for services, such as animals adoptions, drop-off fees, redemption fees, T-shirt purchases, etc. Going forward the only acceptable forms of payment will be Cash, Credit Cards and Money Orders.

(Please note: This does not include donations, this only applies where goods or services are exchanged.)

The Angel Fund Needs Your Help

On Saturday November 12th a resident of Pike County was walking his dog in state game lands when he by chance came across "Bo".

Bo was lying in the woods with an arrow stuck in his shoulder, he apparently was there for a few days, was also emaciated and covered in ticks.

We took him to our friend Dr. Carlos on in Valley Central who operated on Bo.

Unfortunately Bo had to be euthanized once he got back to the shelter.

On Saturday November 19th we will be holding a low-cost rabies and vaccination clinic for dogs and cats. We will be at the GDS Fairgrounds on Route 507 in Newfoundland, near Greentown. For directions please see their website at www.gdsfair.com.

Costs will start at $15 - $30 for various tests and vaccinations. We are accepting cash and credit cards. No checks.

Microchipping will also be available for $25.

You do not have to be a Pennsylvania resident.

ALSO: all dogs must be on leashes and all cats in carriers.

Country Kettle Adoption Weekend

Girl Scout Troop 591 Keeps on Giving

7/23/2011 UPDATE!!

On June 9th all the girls from GS Troop 591 received their Bronze Award!!

Well deserved!

5/24/2011 - After the girls of Troop 591 completed their volunteer requirements to earn their badge, they’ve continued to help the Humane Society because (they tell us) they feel their assistance is going to a cause they believe in – and because helping with the pets at an adoption event is FUN!
Composed of 5th and 6th graders, the troop’s volunteers donated over $500 worth of pet and shelter supplies through their own individual donations, from donations solicited from Bushkill Boarding, and from class mates at Bushkill Elementary and Lehman Intermediate schools.

“It is so rewarding to see what the girls are getting from their experiences, the pride they show in helping, and their enthusiasm with the pets,” noted a shelter volunteer involved in helping to set up the scouts’ participation. “Their leaders and involved parents are very instrumental in giving the girls this opportunity, and we are grateful to them as well,” the volunteer concluded.

Groups interested in becoming involved in gathering donations, helping out at the shelter or events should contact the Humane Society at pikecountyhs@gmail.com or by calling the shelter and leaving contact information so we can get in touch.

An Angel In Trouble

Angel, a senior Border Collie/Flat-Coated Retriever mix, was surrendered to another shelter because her owner was moving and was not going to take her along. She spent her whole life on a chain outside with little or no human contact. She is 8 - 10 years old and has an old broken or dislocated leg. Being a senior and having an old injury, Angel did not stand a chance of Adoption. So, she was scheduled for euthanasia and even given the first shot to start the process. However, just before she was given the second shot it was discovered she was pregnant and ready to have babies. Angel was placed back in a kennel and allowed to wake up............3 days later she gave birth to 7 healthy babies.

UPDATE: Angel's puppies are now 6 weeks old and they are going to another shelter to be adopted. However, Angel was going to be left behind and stand the same fate as before she had her puppies. We, at Pike County Humane Society couldn't stand by and let her meet that same fate. Our hearts broke for this beautiful "Angel". So, Angel will be coming to our shelter on Saturday, April 23rd. She will get her much needed rest, going to a specialist (Our wonderful Dr. Carlos from Valley Central) for her leg and will be given the love and compassion she so well deserves.

4/26 UPDATE: Angel had her surgery today. She was scheduled to go down today, however, she was in such pain with her leg that I took her yesterday. She was so scared that she hid under the bench of the Doctor's office. Her leg is broken and it is due to a very old injury. Angel suffered for years with a broken leg. Her surgery will be $1200.00 for her spay and to fix her broken leg.

Why do we do this? WE CARE! All of us at Pike County Humane Society believe that no animal should die without knowing human love, kindness and compassion. Whether it is for an hour, a day or a year. Help us help her. We are in desperate need of funds to help with her surgery, spaying and other medical needs. Please find it in your heart and see what we see in this beautiful, senior Mom. She took care of her babies even with a broken leg. Angel will also be up for Adoption. If there is a family who wants to give an "Angel" a home and fulfill her dreams of what it is like to be loved, then come see her this Saturday.

Please, we are begging for help with her medical bill. Our funds are extremely low but we could not let this little girl die. She stayed alive to give her puppies a life, we felt that she deserved to live too. PLEASE find it in your heart to help our "Angel".

The Girl Scouts of Troop 591 in Bushkill Help Out at the Country Kettle Adoption Days

It was great to have the helping hands of a group of Bushkill’s Troop 591 scouts at our Country Kettle Adoption Days on April 9th and 10th. While being shown how to handle the cats and kitties and the pups and dogs, the girls enjoyed playing with and socializing our felines, and cuddling and walking the smaller dogs at our event.

“Our pets really benefit from exposure to kind and gentle young people, making them more adoptable as they become more comfortable with loving humane contact,” noted Phyllis Simpson, a Humane Society volunteer who works with our Kathy Varkados in lining up volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups.

Low Cost Rabies and Vaccination Clinic

Sunday 3/20 we held our third and final rabies and low-cost vaccination clinic of the season. Over 400 animals were taken care of. We may do more this Fall so keep checking back for the schedule.

We have a lot great dogs and cats at the shelter right now who would love to go to a good loving home. All our cats and dogs are spay/neutered, up to date on vaccinations and even microchipped. All you need to do is provide the home and the love.

Recently we rescued Blue, as Australian Cattle Dog, from the Bowling Green shelter in Kentucky. Blue was dropped off at the shelter from a breeder who said she was "stupid". Blue is neurologically impaired and special needs so she was fostered by our board member Kathy, who works with special needs animals.

Kathy was also screening potential adopters and got a note from Kevin and Tim in Massachusettes, who drove all the way down for her. They have experience with special needs dogs and passed the "Kathy test" so we knew they were going to be good parents.

After they got Blue (now named Maggie) home they sent us news and videos.

"Maggie is really awesome, and she has fit in perfectly here. There honestly was absolutely NO adjustment period at all. She's just one of us, and it was instant. She and [their other dog] Kobi slept next to one another the whole ride home without any issues. She is eating and drinking great, playing like a wild girl, and could not be more friendly with us and with our other animals. Her tail NEVER stops wagging, and the kisses are abundant!!! We're really crazy about her! Thank you!! I'm so happy your shelter was willing to adopt out of state.

We only wanted a special needs puppy because we have the time and interest. Our local shelter (Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, MA) has lots of puppies all the time, but they rarely get a special needs. Tim and I realize from our experience with Ozzi how much love and reward comes with caring for a special needs dog, and were committed to finding one because for whatever reason we realize that these dogs are less "adoptable" because people think they are too difficult. Truthfully, they are not. Although Ozzi was diabetic and had multiple orthopedic and neurological issues, we never felt it was a big deal to manage him. It takes more time, and we're lucky to have it. As far as Kobi and Maggie (only one day's experience with Maggie...LOL), it's really nothing. I hardly consider either to be special needs. They are both independent in their own right, and just need more "watching over." I know that some people won't even consider a special needs animal, and Tim and I both use Kobi's (and now Maggie's) situations to educate people who ALWAYS come up to us when we're out to see the cute puppies. We figure if we can tell as many people as possible about special needs dogs, we might change the opinion of some, or even one person. So that's our hidden agenda!! We already know how much love these puppies have to give, and from our perspective, we are lucky to have them.

Walk-a-Thon

On Saturday October 23rd we teamed up with Safe Haven of Pike County for a joint fundraiser to benefit both our organizations. We had a Walk-a-Thon at Airport Park in Matamoras.

We even had Fr. William McGinty of Church of the Good Shepherd & St. John the Evangelist in Milford do a Blessing of the Animals. Below is a video of the blessing.

Last year we created calendars with pictures people sent of their pets. This year we're doing the same except you can now have your best friend's picture on a specific date (please note, it is first come, first served for dates, please indicate alternate dates when filling out the order form).

Country Kettle Cans for Cats and Canines

Country Kettle is collecting cans for our cuties. Could you kindly come up with cans for cats and canine companions?

We also need other supplies but I can't think of any that start with "C".

Right now we are very low on canned food so we would prefer that but we do need supplies like bleach, bedding for rabbits and guinea pigs, dishwashing detergent, laundry detergent and kitty litter.

You can bring these to the shelter directly but Country Kettle in E. Stroudsburg has also volunteered to be a drop-off point if you are closer to them. They are at 2523 Milford Road (Business Route 209) and you can call them at 421-8970 with any questions.

For every book you donate, Pike County Humane Society receives:

Our Goal is $3,500 - $5,000 and will take place over the next 3 months.

Please donate new or gently read books. Please, no mold or mildew on books, must be in readable condition and not falling apart or missing pages. We also request that they should not be more than 30 yrs. old

A fun time was had by all at Gresham’s Chop House on Rt. 507, on Wednesday, March 3rd at a “Realtors to the Rescue” Fundraiser to benefit the Pike County Humane Society (PCHS). Spearheaded by Patti Steimling and a team of animal lovers and Humane Society supporters, the fundraiser provided much needed dollars, generated through an admission charge and raffle ticket sales.

In addition to revenue, the evening also provided great conversation and hospitality in a cordial bar/lounge atmosphere, hot and cold Hors D’oevres donated by the Gresham Chop House, and a tricky tray raffle with prizes donated by real estate companies, stores, businesses and individuals.

At the end of the event, PCHS Executive Director Barry Heim introduced Coco (pictured here) as a representative of the shelter’s adoptables, “…the real beneficiaries of events such as these,” Heim noted.

AMAZING ANIMAL RESCUE!

On Friday January 29th we were expecting a delivery of rescue animals from the Bowling Green rescue in Kentucky. They were driving up in their custom-made transport vehicle to deliver dozens of animals to PCHS and other animal shelters.

At 4:30 a.m. Kathy, our volunteer and board member, got a call from them. Their vehicle snapped a drive-shaft in West Virginia and they weren't going anywhere. Furthermore the heating system wasn't working properly and the dogs in the back had nowhere to go.

Kathy quickly made some calls. She, Barry, Janet and Ally took the two shelter vans to head down. In addition they were joined by Dr. Clair from AWSOM animal rescue in Monroe County. They drove several hours and arrived on the scene about 2:00 p.m.

They loaded up 71 animals and met other groups in Allentown PA to complete the delivery.

With over two hundred animals our clinic went way beyond expectations on Saturday.

Doors opened at 10:00 and there was already a line. We were supposed to stop at 2:00 but we gave our last vaccine at 6:05. Youch!

1 - My life is likely to last 10-15 years, any separation from you will be painful for me. Remember that before you buy me.

2 - Give me time to understand what you want from me, don't be impatient, short-tempered, or irritable.

3 - Place your trust in me and I will always trust you back. Respect is earned not given as an inalieable right.

4 - Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment, I am not capable of understanding why? I only know I have been rejected, you have your work entertainment and friends I only have you.

5 - Talk to me sometimes, even if I don't understand your words I understand your voice and your tone, "you only have to look at my tail".

6 - Be aware that however you treat me I'll never forget it, and if it's cruel it may affect me forever.

7 - Please don't hit me I can't hit back, but I can bite and scratch and I really don't ever want to do that.

8 - Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right foods or I've been out in the sun too long, or my heart is getting old and weak, I may be just dog tired.

9 - Take care of me when I get old. You too will grow old and may also need love, care, comfort, and attention.

10 - Go with me on difficult journeys, never say, "I can't bear to watch" or "Let it happen in my absence". Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember, irrespective of what you do I will always love you.

Vitamin C for Guinea Pigs

Did you know that Guinea Pigs are one of the few mammals whose bodies don't produce vitamin C on their own?

Your Guinea Pig's diet is very important. Only Guinea Pig specific pellets have enough vitamin C. If you feed your Guinea Pig rabbit pellets, he will get sick and die, as there is not enough vitamin C for your GP, and the rabbit food will create depletion of calcium.

Guinea Pig pellet food should be bought in smaller quantities to insure freshness because the vitamin C breaks down quickly.

Since it's not possible to know exactly how fresh the pellets are, it's always best to supplement the vitamin C in your cavies' diet with fresh fruit and vegetables high in vitamin C, in small amounts, every day.

Fresh oranges, kale, fresh alfalfa hay and green peppers are good examples of fresh vitamin C sources.

You can also get vitamin C drops you can put in the Guinea Pig's water bottle. And you can find other vitamin C treats at your pet store, like orange flavored yogurt drops with vitamin C.

Donation Receipts

THANK YOU to everyone who's donations have made all the difference in the lives of the animals here at the Pike County Humane Society!

Here's a little update about the receipting process, and some changes coming for 2010.

As you may already know, your donations to the Pike County Humane Society are tax deductible. We are a 501-3-C IRS recognized charity organization. Donations are tax deductible.

However, anytime you receive a benefit from your money, it's a purchase, not a donation, and it is not tax deductible. A benefit would be for example: buying raffle tickets, the purchase of a sweatshirt, the purchase of tickets to an event, the adoption fee for a pet, or buying pumpkins at the Pumpkin Patch. While these things are great and really do help us, they are not tax deductible, since you received something in exchange for your money. Only "Donations" according to the IRS are tax deductible, meaning you donated money to a charity and received nothing in return.

In general, we will mail you a tax deduction receipt for donations of $15 or more. If you do not need a receipt, we'd appreciate it if you'd put a note with your donation stating so. Every penny helps!

As a 501-C-3, we provide you with a receipt stating your money was a donation, and that no goods or services (like tshirts or raffle tickets) were provided in exchange. This is why your canceled check or paypal receipt is not enough for your taxes - these things don't state that no benefit was incurred, and that this was really a donation.

We can receive your donations by check mailed to the PO Box, or we can receive your Paypal donation quickly online.

We hope you'll continue to think of us and help us care for the animals during 2010.

In Memory of Jingle

"Today was an extremely difficult day for me and my girl Jingle. Jingle couldn't walk or even get up for the past few months. She could only raise her head, but still had all her senses about her. After months of battling bed sores, changing her and setting her up on pillows, it was time to let go - even though BOTH of us weren't ready. My heart is broken. It is 5 years ago today that a shelter worker begged me to take her. She was 10 years old, sight unseen and I said yes. Jingle and I went thru a lot the passed 5 years. The day before she came home, she was diagnosed with high positive heartworm. They asked me if I still wanted her (DUH). After her treatment, I noticed a lump. I took her to the vet and there the vet took out a piece of bullet from an old bullet wound. In the past 18 months, she had 2 bouts of old dog vestibular and then a stroke. The fighter that she was, after 2 months of not walking, I got her on her feet again. This time she couldn't.

By the way, she got her name by the Humane Officer in Indiana that tried to catch her for 3 days on the interstate the week of Christmas 2004."

Bark Avenue is owned and operated by Miss Lisa, graduate of the New York School of Dog Grooming. Lisa has been grooming dogs for 25 years, and has spent a huge part of her life caring about animals.

Please remember that grooming your dog isn't just a luxury, it's also a necessity. Dogs with hair instead of fur tend to get knots and hair matting, which pulls at their skin and hurts. Additionally, knots and mats are breeding grounds for unwanted infestations. Dry skin can be itchy and lead to hotspots.

Dogs with fur need bathing and brushing too, to help with their change of seasons coat. Having your dog's nails clipped, anal glands expressed and ears cleaned are beneficial to your dog's healthy life.

Another big benefit of having your dog professionally groomed is the socialization factor. Some times, a family dog's social interaction is restricted to the family and the friends that come to the home. The dog has little experience dealing with people or other pets in areas other than his own territory - his home. Often the only different interaction occurs at the annual veterinary visit, and then the owner may wonder why the dog is stressed and scared. Bringing your dog to a regular happy event outside of the home is GREAT for his socialization, and will do wonders for his vet visit anxiety.

Ally Smith, PCHS Board Member, volunteered at the Holiday Pet Photos event, and brought along her dog, Nitro, who played and played and played in that big beautiful playroom all day long! Ally tell us Nitro had such a great time! She said she just couldn't even believe how clean and nice everything was, and is looking forward to visiting Bark Avenue again soon.

Your Dog's First Aid Kit

Be prepared. Keep a first aid box in your home for your dog the way you do for the rest of your family. If your dog has special needs discuss with your veterinarian any special items you should keep handy. General items you should have for any dog cover a variety of possible problems, from bee stings to wounds.

A styptic pencil or powder in case your dog catches a toenail that bleeds is necessary. You should have Benadryl for allergic reactions. You should also have Betadine or a good povodine iodine solution to clean bites or wounds in case your dog is ever entangled with another animal. Good gauze and water proof tape are also musts. Pepto Bismol or Pepcid AC, and a can of pumpkin like you'd use to make pumpkin pie should be kept in your house to address diarrhea and constipation respectively. A bottle of eye wash or saline solution is smart to have.

Having a first aid kit is not a replacement for veterinary care. If your dog is bleeding, or in anaphylactic shock, you need to seek the help of a veterinary medical professional. However, there is no excuse for not being prepared.

When you call your veterinarian or your animal emergency hospital, let them know what products you have that might help. There's a big difference between having to call your vet to say, "My dog has been stung by a bee can can't breath!" and in saying, "My dog has been stung by a bee and can't breath! I have Benadryl in my hands. What should I do?"

Often even if your vet wants you to bring your dog immediately for medical attention, your ability to administer on-the-spot help can be life saving.

If your bring your dog on vacation with you, bring the first aid kit. Even if you bring the dog on a long hike or drive, put the kit in the car with you. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Here's an important tip: have a copy of your dog's most recent vaccination record, signed rabies certificate and license copied and ready right there inside of your first aid kit. How many times do you have an emergency close to home, and during regular business office hours? Exactly. On the chance that you have an emergency while away from home, or during hours when your veterinarian is not reachable, you will have your dog's records handy to present to the on-call or emergency vet. Be sure to tell the emergency vet about any medical conditions like thyroid condition or lyme disease.

Every year the Pike County Chamber of Commerce celebrates volunteerism with a dinner and an evening of recognition and thanks. Area charities are invited to participate, each naming their own Volunteer of the Year.

This year the Pike County Humane Society celebrates the dedication of Kathy Varkados, long time supporter and friend to the PCHS. Kathy not only volunteers with us and shares her home with many wonderful rescued pets, she also became a board member this year. We'd like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that we couldn't be doing all the important work we do without the dedication and constant support from our core group of hard-working volunteers. Thanks Kathy for being an exemplary part of this team!

What can you do to help?

Many things! Lots of things! You do not have to have a ton of time or a ton of money to make a difference.

Here's 7 things you can do right now:

1. – SPREAD THE WORD
Go onto our site and check out the Upcoming Events link.
Email that info and link to your friends and coworkers as often as you can.
Print it out and hang up the info at your office or community bulletin board.

Link the shelter website onto your website. Most likely, you have a website. Do you have a blog? Got a facebook page? Myspace? Ebay listings? Business website? Yahoo profile? MSN Live profile? Are you on classmates or reunion or linked or anything? Well... Link us!

Do you have an area business?
You could hang flyers to our events in your front window. (We often include them with our twice-a-month emailer. Or you can make your own!)

You could put a donation can or even a food donation bin in your storefront.

2 - ORGANIZE YOUR OWN FUNDRAISER!

It doesn’t have to be a big thing.
Are you having everyone over for a Birthday Party, Holiday Get Together or a little barbecue?
Put right in your email invites –
“Please bring one can of dog or cat food for the Pike County Humane Society!”
or “We’re asking our guests to donate $2 each to the PCHS in lieu of gifts.”

You’d be surprised. Those 12 cans of food you gather, or that $20 you collect could help save an unwanted animal’s life.

Think you want to take on something a little bigger? Wonderful! Have a little bake sale, or a tag sale. Invite your neighbors to join you in a yard sale where the proceeds or a percentage of the profits go to the shelter. Sponsor a photography contest, or a poetry contest. Have a hot cider or lemonade stand. You probably have an idea already!

Maybe you have your own small business. Could you pick a product from which you could donate a dollar of each sale?

One of our favorite members does a candle sale for us every year! She raises money by selling candles to people and sending us the proceeds. A wonderful group of local realtors organized Realtors to the Rescue, and had a cocktail party in our honor. They charged admission, raffled off some prizes, and raised a couple thousand dollars! Local students have held successful educational events such as Pennies for Puppies. The YMCA after school group had a lemonade stand and donated $45! Area bands have had concerts, and motorcycle clubs have had their own runs where proceeds were given to us. The Cinder Inn has an annual Memorial Day Concert for us! Most recently Altec Lansing raffled off some products to their employees, sending the money raised to Safe Haven, and The Pike County Humane Society.
And speaking of Safe Haven, every year they have a costume parade and costume contest "Mutts & Meows" with us to help benefit both worthy causes, which often working closely together.
Every dollar helps.

3 – VOLUNTEER

We need volunteers of all kinds. We need people to come up to the physical shelter and help us clean. Help us take care of the buildings and grounds, help us create and maintain a safe and wonderful haven for the animals.
We also need volunteers at our fund raisers. Could you help hand out information, sell hotdogs, and walk pets at adoption events? Could you bake us some brownies for our next bake sale?

4 – DONATE

It’s convenient with the PAYPAL link. Or you can drop a couple dollars in our area donation cans. You can pick up a case of canned cat food or dog food and bring it up to the shelter, or drop it off at an area food deposit like the Grand Union in Milford PA. Think about it: if just everyone that reads this could donate $5 imagine how many animals we could feed!!

New items and gift certificates are always needed for our fundraisers! We have basket bingos, tricky trays, raffles, silent auctions and door prizes at different events. Did you get two crock pots at your wedding shower? Did your mother in law get your taste all wrong with her holiday gifts to you? Did you see a nice deal on a new Dirt Devil at Kmart? Do you have some new items your shop is discontinuing? Donate these items to help us have successful fundraisers.

Here's an easy one! Can you donate some home made cookies or muffins to a bake sale? We have bake sales all the time, most often in conjunction with another fundraiser like a tricky tray, spaghetti dinner, or off site pet adoption day. This is a great way for us to raise a few dollars for the animals and make the event all the sweeter ;)

Obviously, monetary donations are always a tremendous help. We need to pay very large veterinary bills every month. We spay and neuter the animals in our care. We make sure none of our pets have worms, fleas or ticks. We rabies vaccinate and do other testings and vaccinations as well. We have medical evaluations performed and we have to make sure we provide medical treatment for the animals that need it.
Additionally, we have to pay for electric and gas, garbage pick up, snow removal, and other operating costs. We have to pay for food and grooming. We need cleaning supplies, and office supplies. We need to maintain our vans and put gas in their tanks so we can bring pets to the vet and back. We have to make sure the shelter is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. We have to maintain the buildings and the grounds so that the animals in our care are always safe.

It costs about $6,000 a week to keep this shelter running. Several area municipalities contribute a few hundred dollars every year which helps. Some contribute nothing. What does your community contribute? The Pike County Commissioners in the past have contributed $4,000 a year. We are grateful for these contributions. But please realize - they do not even cover one week’s worth of expenses....

5 – MAKE YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS LISTEN

Write to your senators, your congressman, your govenor, and your most importantly your county commissioners. Demand that they support this shelter. TELL THEM all the things this shelter does for the county - things that would NOT be done at all without us.

Your vote is your voice. You have the power to make them listen. Attend your municipality or township meetings, and ask what your elected officials are doing to support the only animal shelter and animal response assistance in the county. Make sure they know you aren’t going to support them in their elections if they don’t support us.

6 – COME TO THE EVENTS

We try to have different kinds of fund raisers for you to enjoy. From the tricky trays to the spaghetti dinners, your whole family can usually come out for a few hours of fun for a minimal donation to a very worthy cause. Come to the events. Spread the word. Show your support.

7 – BE A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER

Don’t forget, one of the best things you can do for us is to open your home to a shelter pet.
And, to insure that your pets, no matter where they came from, do not become shelter pets.
Your pets are your commitment and responsibility.
Take that responsibility with the utmost seriousness.

Make sure your pets are happy and healthy and safe. Obey licensing and leash laws. Make sure your pets have the rabies and other vaccinations and annual tests they require to live a happy healthy life. Always neuter or spay your pets, like we do. Do not support puppy mills. Make sure your pets are on a healthy vet-approved diet. Dogs need to be heartworm tested, and they need flea & tick, and heartworm prevention. Do not contribute to the disease and parasite problems in our area. Do not let your pets run loose.

Do not turn your back on your pet. Pets get sick, get old, need training, need help... it is part of your promise to them to care for them through those times. Set a worthy example for your children by showing them the meaning of responsibility and commitment. Do not throw your pet away if it becomes "inconvenient." What are you teaching your children?

And if you aren't in a place where you can make a full and serious commitment to a pet, then don't have any. Your treatment of your pet is important to shaping how your children view living creatures, old age, illness, commitment and responsibility, as well as contributing to the health and well being of the entire community.

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

The Starfish Story A man was walking along the beach one morning. During the night the tide had stranded thousands of starfish on the beach As the waves came crashing in he noticed a little girl in the distance. She was picking up the helpless starfish one at time and putting them back into the ocean. Curious, he approached her, and watched several times as she repeatedly made the effort to accomplish the seemingly impossible task of saving them. Finally, he asked "little girl you cannot possibly save them all so why waste your time?". Without hesitation she picked up another starfish, held it up to the man, and said "tell that to this little starfish". As he thought for a moment the little girl smiled, ran to the ocean and placed the starfish in the water. The man then reached down and picked up two starfish, took them to the safety of the water and continued on his walk.

Fran brought this story to our attention, as it has a special place in her life, and we decided to share it here.

We are offering our senior citizen supporters a chance to share their homes with a senior dog without our asking for an adoption fee for Nov 09. Hopefully this will help certain important members of our community to be able to afford vet care, food and essentials.

Anyone can adopt a senior cat for "a donation," no set fee, just what you would like to give.

All dogs and cats are spayed/neutered and vetted.

No one wants to spend their golden years alone, come meet one of our senior dogs!

CARING FOR YOUR PET RABBIT

Food:

Rabbits need fresh water every day.

They need unlimited amounts of Timothy Hay or Grass Hay every day. Without this hay they will not be able to properly digest. Having the hay also calms them and reduces stress and nervous behaviors.

They also need rabbit food/pellets that you can buy in any pet supply store, and fresh vegetables. The pellets should not contain protein over 16%. A balanced diet is half fresh foods and half pellets.

Fresh foods a rabbit can have are:

Carrots and carrot greens/tops, apples, pears, parsnips and parsnip tops, beets and beet tops, parsley, basil, dandelion, kale, celery, cucumber, and tomato. (A little banana is good too, but don't leave any in there if they aren't interested to eat it right away.)

Do not give your rabbit lettuce or cabbage. These are too high in nitrates, and cause the rabbit digestive distress.

Alfalfa hay and marigold hay are also great for your rabbit’s health. Lionhead rabbits can not have Alfalfa.

Rabbits can also have yogurt drop treats. Yogurt drop treats are also available where you get your rabbit pellet food and your timothy hay.

When looking at other rabbit treats in petshops such as seed sticks, be careful not to give your rabbit any with dyes, sugar, or chemicals.

Papaya is a wonderful digestive aid you can give your rabbit. Putting a chewable papaya tablet from your vitamin shop in your rabbit’s food every day will help keep him comfortable and regular.

A handful of oats, like from the uncooked old fashioned oatmeal box is a great treat for the rabbits especially in winter as it is a natural body warmer.

Do not feed your rabbit grapes or raisins. Just like with dogs, there is a property in the grape skin that can cause kidney damage.

Why all the fuss about digestive health? Rabbits are lagomorphs, which are non-regurgitating animals. Rodents and lagomorphs tend toward having issues with their digestive and excretory systems. A carefully balanced healthy diet is the key to your rabbit’s longevity.

Veterinary Visits:

The are no regular vaccines a rabbit needs. You only need to bring your rabbit to your veterinarian when something is wrong.

Here’s some things that you should watch for:

Rabbits can get ear mites. Mites make hive like homes inside the rabbit’s ears that look like filo dough. If you see these crusty layers in your rabbit’s ears you need to get him medical attention.

Rabbits can get impacted pretty easily. Impaction is when a rabbit’s poop isn’t passing all the way out and packs against the rabbit’s bottom. This can be caused by a cage not being clean enough, or by a digestive illness. Rabbits die from impaction commonly, so if you see signs of this seek medical attention for your pet right away.

Sometimes a rabbit’s teeth keep growing. They need to be clipped just like finger nails with a very sharp tool. If you see your rabbit’s teeth have grown, bring your rabbit to a vet for a teeth trim. Often it’s something your vet can show you how to do yourself but you should consult your veterinarian before trying to clip the teeth as there could be other mouth disorders going on.

There are other illnesses such as upper respiratory snuffles & anorexia, other info like grooming tips for long haired rabbits and genital lap cleaning, and other conditions such as epilepsy. Your veterinarian can answer your questions, or you may want to invest in a decent bunny care book, or seek out an informative website.

Rabbits are communal animals. This means they do not fall within the pack mentality.

Rabbits can be litter box trained. They can live happily in a cage if they get the chance to be taken out and played with, exercised and left to run around free sometimes. They can also live happily outside of a cage, where they can run free in a room or a confined area, where they can use a litter box.

Rabbits are indoor pets. While it is true livestock rabbits used for food can grow a warm enough coat to survive outside in a mild winter in this area, that does not mean that they thrive or are happy. They often suffer heat stroke, dehydration, cage-craze, impaction, or frost bite if forced to live outside, let alone the loneliness the rabbit would suffer.

At the Pike County Humane Society, we have pets for adoption. A pet is a part of the family. A pet is not livestock that should be forced to live outside, isolated and alone.

A Sleeping Angus

Kitty Cottage!

One of the many great things about the Pike County Humane Society is how well we socialize the pets in our care. Here's a little tour of our cat room, a two adjacent room area where cats that have been neutered and vet-checked can play and socialize. No cages in here! Once our cats get a clean bill of health and are spayed/neutered, they live in this cat condo all together. Some of the cats you'll see here have been with us several months or even a year. Some are new arrivals. We hope you enjoy the tour!

Memorial Trees - Adopt a Tree

The Pike County Humane Society has planted trees on the grounds, to provide shade, health and beauty for all the animals that come through our gates.

This Adopt a Tree fundraiser comes at a crucial time for us: our donations are down with the economy, yet our work is ongoing and ever growing, as people need us more and more to help with all animal response in Pike County.

Trees are available for you to sponsor for $150 adoption fee, and will receive a plaque showing the loved one you are honoring. About 50 trees are available on a first come first serve basis.

Our dogs are happy, well-socialized pets, not kept in cages all day long. We really want to make this practice of ours as inviting and comfortable as possible, for the benefit of the dogs.

Dogs & Cars - Get your dog used to car rides

Does your dog go into automatic panic when you put him in your car? Does he whine, cry, drool, vomit, or try to crawl underneath the seat? Do you need to use Acepromazine every time you even think about taking the dog to his annual veterinary appointment?
If so, you're not alone.
Many dogs are afraid of the car. There is something to be said for motion sickness. But it is more likely that their fear is based in negative association or the unknown. The car is scary because it is not a common every day occurrence. What makes the joyride even worse is that it can be associated with going to the groomer, kennel, or vet. In a dog's mind those may not happy places.

Starting early is best, but even an older dog can learn a new love of mobility. All you have to do is make the car a pleasant and routine thing in your dog's life.
To break your dog's habit of thinking every car ride ends in vaccines or baths is not hard and won't take more than a couple minutes a day. As often as you can, try to take the dog into the car. And start by not going anywhere.
Find a few moments here and there that you normally spend at your kitchen table or on the couch that you can just as easily spend in your car. The next time you have a shopping list to write or some calls to return on your cell phone, try sitting in the car to do it, and bring the dog with you. Writing out a few bills, balancing your check book, and reading a book or magazine are just a few examples of things you could do sitting in your car for just a couple minutes with the dog.

After a few weeks of daily little visits in the car, your dog might start to let go of his anxiety. Since dogs are creatures of habit, he might even start running for the car when he sees you pickup the newspaper, or the mail, or your check book. He might even start to look forward to the time you spend together there.
Once your dog is better about being in the car, the next step is to try to ease his fear of the car actually moving.

Take your dog on short trips, especially ones where you don't have to get out of the car. A quick drive to pick up your kids at school or scouts or anyplace you go where you utilize the drive-thru window like the bank, pharmacy, or fast food joint are all great for starters.
This idea is making sense now, isn't it. Slowly build an association for your dog with the car that is positive and simple. Once you can make it through Dunkin Donuts without your dog having any issues, you're ready to take him along on some short errands. I am stressing that these starters be short, like the dry cleaner, Blockbuster, or the post office. These should be trips where you aren't leaving him alone in the car, please ask a family member or friend to join you.

If you don't want to leave him alone in the car even for just a few minutes while you run into Pizza Hut for your to-go order, see if you can bring along someone to wait in the car with the dog. The exercise of the car being shut down and your leaving him briefly is a useful step in nurturing the Dog - Car Relationship.
Don't forget that positive reinforcement is always the best way to teach a dog. Lots of pats and praise for his good behavior will go a long way. A dog treat he can associate with having had some "good car time" might help if used correctly. Punishing his less than stellar behavior is only going to reinforce the anxiety.
It may take some months of newspaper reading in the driveway and errand running around town, but eventually you really will be able to see an improvement in your dog's fear of the car.

General Questions

Q: Are you a "no-kill" shelter?
A: We follow the "No Kill Conference" which states that no animal will be euthanized for space or time. An adoptable animal will stay with us for as long as it takes for us to find him his forever home.

However, if an animal is very sick, suffering, contagious, or excessively aggressive, we will euthanize if our veterinarians recommend doing so. We will do right by every animal. Sometimes the right decision is very hard, but no one here got involved with the shelter because we thought it was going to be easy. This is a real shelter, doing the real work, every day.

Q: Do you spay or neuter animals that are up for adoption?
A: Yes. It is our policy to spay and neuter all animals before they leave the shelter. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Q: I saw an animal on Petfinder.com on the internet and want to come in to see it. Can I just walk in?
A: Yes, you are welcome to just walk in during our regular operating hours. However, you may want to call first to make sure the pet is still available, and to make sure someone is here. We are very short handed and if there is an emergency, like an animal having to go to the vet, or an abuse or emergency call, there is a possibility the shelter could be closed during regular hours. So, it's always best if you can to just give a call that you're on your way.

Q: I called about an animal on Petfinder but it was adopted. Why is the listing still there?
A: Petfinder is maintained by a volunteer at his home, not on the grounds of the shelter. Sometimes the information can take a few days to coordinate. That is why it is recommended that you call the shelter before coming to see a certain animal.

Q: Can I just email to find out if a pet is still available, or to let the staff know I'm on my way?

A: Facebook, Twitter, our email, and our website are all maintained by another volunteer in her home, not at the physical shelter. High Speed internet is not available to us at the physical shelter, so maintaining our online presence there is not possible. It's best if you call the shelter directly at 570.296.7654 to find out the most up to the moment status on pets for adoption, or to let us know you're coming, or to make a drop off appointment.

Q: I left a message on the answering machine. Why hasn't anyone called back?
A: We try to return all calls on the day they're received. However, emergencies can come up that require us to close the shelter. We will try to return all calls as soon as possible. Please also remember to speak clearly when leaving a message. Some are garbled or difficult to understand.

Q: How do I catch a stray dog?
A: You should not try to catch a stray dog. It may be aggressive and/or sick. You should call the dog warden. In Pike County PA, that number is 570-488-9562

Q: How do I catch a stray cat?
A: The best way is to trap them. For a (refundable) deposit of $50 the PCHS will lend you a Have-A-Heart trap and instruct you how to use it. Once trapped, a towel or blanket should be thrown over the trap. A stray cat should NEVER be handled. It may be aggressive or diseased.

Q: What's this about disease?
A: Pike County is one of the worst areas in the United States for feline diseases. A high percentage of feral cats contain Feline Leukemia Virus, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, or Panleukopenia/Distemper. Cats can also be rabid, and feral cats can be seriously aggressive when scared.

Q: Where do your animals come from?
A: All over. Some are dropped off by owners, some are abandoned and discovered by police or landlords. Some are brought in as strays. Some have been seized in abuse cases or from breeders. We will also act as an animal rescue by obtaining animals from other shelters when we can.

Q: Are you associated with the Humane Society of the United States?
A: No, we are completely independent and receive no funding from them.

Q: Is the PCHS a state or federal agency?
A: No. The PCHS receives no state or federal aid of any kind. A small allowance is budgeted by Pike County every year for us which is the equivalent of less than one week's worth of operating cost.

Q: So how does PCHS make money?
A: Mainly through private donations and animal adoptions. We also have various fundraisers during the year, including our annual Tricky Tray, bake sales, and our adoption day events.

Q: What kind of donations do you accept?
A: Monetary donations are always best. We also accept any products that are useful to us, like canned dog and cat food, kitty liter, cleaning products, papertowels, old blankets and towels, and donations for our Tricky Tray basket fundraisers. Q: Do you accept credit cards?
A: Yes, we now accept credit cards! And we also accept donations online through Paypal.

Q: Are my contributions tax deductible?
A: Yes! We are a 501-(c)-3 corporation, which means any donation of cash or goods is 100% tax deductible. Unfortunately, intangible donations, such as helping with construction, maintaining the website, or using similar skills is not tax deductible. If you use your vehicle in service to the shelter, the standard IRS mileage deduction applies. Donations with benefit, such as purchasing raffle tickets or a PCHS t-shirt are not tax deductible.

Q: Do you adopt to residents who don't live in Pike County?
A: Yes. Love knows no state lines. We will adopt out of county and even out of state. We will also accept pets in need from outside our county as well. But please know that our first responsibility is to our neighborhood.

Q: Should I bring family members to meet a new pet first?
A: We recommend bringing family members including pets to meet a new pet. We can arrange time in a private area so that everyone may interact. Sometimes there are surprises so it's better to know before you get a pet home. We have a lovely facility where animals are well socialized.

Q: How do I report animal cruelty?
A: Contact the State Police or the shelter.

Q: A neighbor's dog keeps barking all night. Who do I call?
A: Your neighbor may not realize how loud their dog is, or that you're being bothered. You may want to try letting them know of the situation before you do anything else. If you live in a community, you should call your security personnel. If there is no security, or if you do not live in a community, there may be nothing you can do. You can call the police, but there is actually no ordinance against barking dogs in Pennsylvania.

Q: Can I bring an animal in that I don't want?
A: Yes, but please call first and make a drop-off appointment. We will require a drop-off fee. Even if you're bringing in a stray you need to call first, so that we can make sure someone will be here to accommodate you, and that we are prepared to accommodate the specific animal.

Q: Can I board an animal with you?
A: Sorry, no. We are not licensed to board privately owned animals. We are only licensed to act as a temporary shelter for homeless animals.

Q: What are procedures for surrendering an animal?
A: Please call the shelter first to ask when to bring the animal in. We require you to sign an "Animal Release" form which will legally surrender the animal to us. We also require a drop-off fee.

Q: What happens if I adopt an animal from you but decide later I don't want to keep it?
A: Our adoption contract is clear on this point: if you do not want or can not keep the animal, you must return the animal to us. Legally you must return the animal to the PCHS.

Q: What if I didn't adopt from the PCHS?
A: You should first try to return the pet to the agency from which you adopted. You should be wary of agencies that will not accept a pet back.

Q: My pet was brought to your shelter as a stray. How do I get it back?
A: Come in and fill out the "Return to Owner" form. We require a "Return Fee". If you are coming for a dog you will be required to provide proof of license. Anyone without proof of license will be required by law to purchase a license through us.

Q: What are the procedures for adopting an animal?
A: If you find an animal you would like to adopt here, great! We will work with you to get the right pet into the right home. You must fill out our Adoption Application and Placement Contract at the shelter, and you must pay our adoption fee. Your application will be investigated and references may be checked. Please note that any Pike County residents who adopts a dog will be required to purchase a dog license at the time of adoption.

Ballet Riverside's performers range in age from 3 to 16.

Special Needs Fostering

The Pike County Humane Society is in need of foster homes. Many dogs that wind up abandoned here or rescued from abuse and neglect by our dedicated team, need some special attention. We have one dog right now that needs a quiet place to heal. As wonderful as this shelter is, it isn't exactly "quiet."

Many times an injured dog or cat just needs a chance to heal in a clean, quiet, still, safe environment. Sometimes the pet needs that extra love and tenderness necessary to learn to trust again.

If you could offer temporary sanctuary in your home to a needy pet for us, you'd be helping to get that animal the second chance it deserves at finding a permanent home.

Call the shelter at 570-296-7654. Ask to speak with Barry about becoming a foster home to a special needs pet.

The cost to you would be minimal: a little food, a little warmth.

In Memory of Laura Sletner

It is with deep regret and sadness that we announce the passing of Laura Sletner on January 23, 2009. Laura passed away suddenly in the morning. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends and of course the animals she always helped.

Laura was a volunteer and board member for over 10 years and was involved in all aspects of running and helping the shelter. Producing and editing the shelter newsletter and writing press releases were some of her many responsibilities. She had many interests and volunteered for other organizations but the shelter was always first and foremost for her.

Larry, Kathleen and Ian arranged this party in celebration of Laura's life and the legacy she leaves behind.

Many of Laura's friends and family came and the event was really beautiful and cathartic. We talked about Laura, we shared a great dinner, good spirits and dessert, and we even participated in a Laura trivia game. It felt great to be with so many people that loved Laura, to share her dream of having a 40th birthday.

Donation Receipts

We've told you about our receipting process for your donations in our newsletters in 2008. Thank you so much for your understanding and responses to the articles! Your donations are what puts food in the bowls for the pets in our care. Your donations provide these animals with heat, and water, and medical care, and a place to stay safe and sound until we can find them a permanent home. We can’t do this without your donations.

Because your taxes are important, we’d like to go over some key points, and review the important things you need to know.

1 – The PCHS is a 501-C-3 government recognized charity organization. This means your donations without benefit are tax deductible. In order to maintain our 501-C-3 status, there are certain things we are required to do, like provide you with a receipt for your tax deductible donations for your taxes. Your canceled check is not a receipt.

2 – Donations that have any kind of “benefit” attached to them aren’t tax deductible. According to the law you made a purchase with benefit if - you purchase raffle tickets, if you purchase tickets for the Tricky Tray, if you pay the adoption fee for a dog, if you pay for your dog’s license, if you pay a redemption fee, if you buy a brownie at a bake sale, tickets to spaghetti dinner, a PCHS sweatshirt, etc. These things not tax deductible. These are not included in your tax receipts. These are GREAT ways to help the shelter help the animals. And we are super-grateful to you for supporting us in these ways. But please understand that these are technically purchases with a benefit to you, and under the law these are not "donations" and will not receive a tax deductible donation receipt.

3 – In general we do not mail you a receipt for a donation under $5.00.

4 – We invite you to make a donation notation. You can specifically state that your donation is in Honor of someone special, or in Memory of someone gone. (Please remember, purchasing raffle tickets is not making a donation. You actually have to make a "donation" to request someone be recognized in your donation.)

These notated donations are still receipted to you and additionally if you request it, we will send an Acknowledgment Card to the person you’re honoring or to the family of someone you’re Memorializing. You need to include the address where you’d like the acknowledgment sent.

5 – If you do not need a receipt for your donation, it would be a help to us if you would note that. That saves us some volunteer time and the cost of postage. We’ve noticed some of you sending in your own return self addressed stamped envelope for your receipt. Thank you!

6 – 2008 was the first year we were dealing with the tax regulation changes so directly. We’re volunteers doing the best we can to obey all the regulations and tax laws regarding our 501-C-3 status and to make sure you have every benefit you deserve for your generosity. We’re still running a couple months behind on getting receipts out to you. We have a new system in place and it’s going great! Thanks again for your understanding.

7 – If you make a donation using Paypal online, your tax receipt will be emailed to you. Just like with a canceled check your Paypal receipt is not proof that you made a tax deductible donation. Just like if you made a donation by check or cash, you need the tax deduction receipt which states your donation had no benefit, like the purchase of raffle tickets, a t-shirt or tickets to an event.

Meet the Board - Fran Morey

Hi! I'm Fran Morey from the Board of Directors of the Pike County Humane Society.

I’ve lived in this area my entire life, and moved to Dingmans Ferry, PA, in 1993, where I now live with my husband Frank and my two children Rebekah and AJ.

We have four dogs (Ashley, Ruby, Candy, & Cody), four cats (Pussin’ Boots, Tiger, Coco, & Tommy), three hamsters (Bear, Teddy Roosevelt, & Sunshine), two lovebirds (Ferdinand & Isabella), five canaries (Bulls-Eye, Pepperoni, Licorice, Buttercup, & Sherlock), six finches, and two fresh-water aquariums.

I have been on the Board of the Pike County Humane Society since February 2007, and am now honored to be the Vice-President. I am so happy to be helping such wonderful people make a difference for so many terrific animals -- one animal at a time – and I feel as if I am fulfilling my life-long dream in the process.

I’m very fortunate that my husband, Frank, is so supportive of my ambitions and also lends a hand to volunteer at the shelter and at our fund-raising events. My children also pitch in and help out where they can – the adoption days and fundraisers often become Family Events for us and are ways that we spend quality time together, working for the animals.

Besides working with the Pike County Humane Society, I am employed as a Crime Victims Counselor with the Orange County Probation Department since January 1989. I recently was honored by receiving the “Hope” award from Safe Homes of Orange County for my work with Domestic Violence victims/survivors.

Additionally, I’m an Elder for my church – Faith Reformed Church, in South Centerville, NY.

I guess you could say that I don’t sit still for very long!! ☺

Frank is employed as a Senior Construction Inspector, with Tectonic Engineering & Surveying Consultants P.C. He is also currently serving in the Army Reserves as a 1st Lieutenant with the Medical Services Corp.

In our free time, Frank and I like to ride our Harley – we like to be able to just have that alone time with nobody else around us but us, the wind, the road, and the ride…… We also love hockey (Go Sabres! Frank & AJ like the Rangers….) and football (Go Bills! AJ routes for the Giants – can’t understand that one at all!), and have attended numerous Buffalo Bills games at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, and then after the game would go to Niagara Falls. Frank and the kids like to go to monster truck shows too, and really enjoy when Milford Chrysler brings the monster trucks here!

Now that you have gotten to know me a little better, I’m looking forward to getting to know each of you a little better as well. I hope you will all come out to see us at our upcoming events or come up to the Pike County Humane Society, see how wonderful we really are, and what great pets are there waiting for you!! ☺

Refrigerator Notes

The following was found posted very low on a refrigerator door.

Dear Dogs and Cats,

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food.

The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate of food does not stake a claim for it to becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort.
Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years - canine/feline attendance is not required.

The proper order for kissing is:
Kiss me first, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough.

Finally, in fairness dear pets, I have posted the following message on the front door:

TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS:

(1) They live here. You don't.

(2) If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That's why they call it 'fur'-niture.

(3) I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.

(4) To you, they are animals. To me, they are adopted sons/daughters who are short, hairy, walk on all fours and don't speak clearly.

Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

(1) eat less,

(2) don't ask for money all the time,

(3) are easier to train,

(4) normally come when called,

(5) never ask to drive the car,

(6) don't hang out with drug-using people;

(7) don't smoke or drink,

(8) don't want to wear your clothes,

(9) don't have to buy the latest fashions,

(10) don't need a gazillion dollars for college

(11) don't cause you heartache from their decisions and

(12) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children ...

Are all board meetings open to the public?

No, not all.

Some of the regularly scheduled meetings of the Board of Directors of the Pike County Humane Society are open to the public. We meet on the first and third Mondays of every month, at 221 Broad Street, which is the Biondo Building in Milford, PA.

However we have to close some meetings. These closed meetings are called "Executive Sessions" and are not open to the public. Only board members may attend those meetings.

Here are some of the types of work that have to be done in Executive Session:

1 - The PCHS assists different law enforcement agencies with cruelty cases. Often the preparation or execution of these cases is something we have to keep confidential per the attorneys involved, or the law enforcement agency with which we're cooperating. When the board needs to discuss and work on specific confidential cruelty investigations or cases, we have to do so in Executive Session until such time as the lawyers let us know we can discuss the case, or the case goes to trial. Even during a trial, sometimes the details of a case are kept confidential for legal reasons.

2 - All adoptions are private. If we have some work to discuss or motions to be made regarding surrenders or adoptions, we have to do this in closed session to protect the privacy of those involved.

3 - Some businesses and private citizens make anonymous donations. They want to contribute to the work we do but they do not want their names published. Therefore to honor that request we discuss those donations in private session.

If you would like to attend a meeting you should call the shelter prior to the meeting to make sure it will be open to the public. Thanks for your understanding.

When you bring a dog into your family, you become that dog's pack.

Forcing a dog to sleep outside away from his pack, alone, is inhumane. An "outside" dog is a suffering dog, with very few exceptions.

A dog chained up outside has no quality of life. The mental abuse he endures is unconscionable.

Have some compassion. If you can't give your dog the love and humanity he deserves, then give him to someone who will.

Helping Lost Dogs Get Home

Lost Dog That Can’t Come Home?

In late November 2007, seven year old Tootsie Roll was lost by his owner the Stubits in Sullivan County, NY when she broke off his lead outside where she had been left unattended all day. Fifteen year old Jenna, who received the dog as a Christmas present 6 years ago, hung flyers and canvassed the area. The Stubits also submitted adds to the newspapers, but did not contact every shelter in a large radius from their home.

Tootsie Roll was not licensed. She has no ID tags. She had no micro chip. There was nothing on Tootsie Roll that would have indicated to anyone who she was or where she lived.

The dog was found unharmed, and brought to the Middletown Humane Society in Orange County NY. The Middletown HS did everything they are supposed to do. They held the dog for 5 days which is the law in New York. The shelter, having no means by which to identify the dog, then did what was best for the dog. They put the dog up for adoption, and almost immediately found the dog a great home. The dog was adopted by a loving family, who like the shelter, did everything correctly, and wanted to do the best they could for the homeless dog.

The adoption is legal. Yet the Stubits have hired a lawyer and are trying to get the dog back. Everyone in the situation sounds sympathetic and sad, but the fact is that the Stubits’ did not license the dog, which is required by law.

At the Pike County Humane Society, we hold all new arrivals for several reasons. One of them is to try to identify the dog and the dog’s home. This holding time gives the owners time to find us. Also during this time we can best assess the dog’s health, neuter status, and personality so that we can do the most we can for each dog, and find each dog the most appropriate home

But that still doesn’t change the fact that you need to license your dog. It is required by law. And it is your best protection to get your dog back should he ever become separated from you.

Pennsylvania is unique in that it offers lifetime licensing. To license your dog in NY, NJ, CT and PA, you need to present a copy of your dog’s signed rabies certificate from your veterinarian. The cost is minimal and this process takes a very short amount of time.

If your dog is lost, you want whoever finds him to be able to find his home. If your dog wears a collar or harness, he should be wearing his tags. These should include his license, his rabies tag and an ID tag, all of which can be used by the shelter to find the dog’s owner.

Additional precautions you can take are microchipping and tattooing.

Some veterinarians offer tattooing. The standard tattoo is on the inner left rear leg, and should be a phone number. If it’s some little “code” that means something to you, that you think will help you prove the dog belongs to you, think again. Anyone who finds the dog and really wants to keep it, can look at that secret word or number and make up why they had that tattoo done. But much more importantly, a shelter, an animal control officer or a good Samaritan has no way of finding you by looking at the secret date or word tattooed on the pooch’s leg. It’s a wasted procedure if you don’t put a phone number there.

The more popular and cost effective alternative is Microchipping. Chipping is standard in many places. A tiny harmless microchip is inserted under the skin between the dog’s shoulders. Any shelter has a chip reader that scans the area and searches for the chip. The chip would provide them with a unique serial number issued to your dog. By calling the national registry with that serial number, the shelter would be able to reunite you with your dog. You should contact your veterinarian for more information on chipping.

But the best medicine is prevention. Dogs should not be let out without a safely fenced in yard, and should be monitored even if you think the fence is secure. They should not be taken for walks without being on a secure leash. They should not be left unattended on a lead, like Tootsie Roll was. It is all too common that a dog that “never takes off” suddenly sees a fox, or cat, or hears a car backfire, or a kid scream, and for the first time ever the dog runs. Anything could happen. The dog could become lost, stolen, hit by a car, trapped, or more.

If a dog bolts, running hard and fast, he can plow through an electric fence sometimes without even getting a shock. Then, when and if a calmed, more trepidations dog returns home, he can’t get back onto his property for fear of electrocution. An electric fence keeps the dog out as well as in. Some people feel electric fences are very effective. But just like with an outside lead, dogs escape. Do not think you don’t have to pay attention and monitor your dog just because you think he’s fenced in.

Chains, leads, collars and harnesses should be checked often for their integrity.

Euthanasia

This is an open letter from the Board of Directors of the Pike County Humane Society to our volunteers and members, regarding the very difficult subject of euthanasia.

The PCHS is NOT a no-kill shelter.
The PCHS does however, follow no-kill charter, meaning: we do not euthanize any adoptable pet.
We do not euthanize for time or space, and we do not euthanize anything upon entrance as some organizations do, like Pit Bulls. We are extremely lucky that we are able to follow the no-kill charter. Not all shelters can.

If someone makes a comment about how a shelter put a dog down too fast, CONCENTRATE ON THE REAL PROBLEM, not on the shelter trying to solve the problem the best it can. The real problem is that some dog owners don't understand the full responsibility they take on by having a dog. It is hard to be in a shelter that takes in 100 dogs a day. We really sympathize with that shelter for having to make such a hard decision.

There are two types of shelters - Closed-Door Policy Shelters, and Open-Door Policy shelters. An Open-Door Shelter addresses the entire problem of unwanted discarded pets. A Closed-Door shelter addresses only the small part of the problem that they feel like dealing with, subsequently contributing to the problem as a whole.

The Pike County Humane Society is an Open-Door shelter. We take in every animal. We don't pick and choose.

A Closed-Door or No Kill shelter greatly limits the number of animals they are willing to help, and the types of animals they are willing to help. By law and logistics, they can only accept a fixed number of dogs at time, all other needy dogs are turned away. Many will only accept "adoptable dogs," seeking out the young, the healthy, the obedient, the cute.

An Open-Door shelter accepts all animals. The young and the old, the sick and the tired, the healthy and the medically needy, the obedient and the disobedient, the cute ones, and the not-so cute ones. Any animal that is unwanted, is accepted.

No one at the PCHS wants to euthanize an animal. No one at the PCHS thinks it's an easy decision. Everyone at the PCHS wishes we had the funds, laws, facility, room, time, number of qualified volunteers and miracles to save every animal. But the realistic situation is that it isn’t possible. The hard truth is merciful euthanasia is the best we can do for many dogs that are contagious, suffering, or aggressive.

Some dogs that are unwanted are not currently vaccinated, not neutered, not trained correctly, have a problem like anxiety or excessive barking and chewing, are older, are sick, or are not as "cute" as they were when they were puppies. What do you think happens to that huge number of unwanted animals turned away from no kill shelters? The dogs that a no-kill shelter refused to help, has few alternatives.

Sometimes they wind up at an Open-Door Policy shelter, like ours. Sometimes they are brought back home where they are neglected or abused. And most times, they are abandoned. They are strays. Alone, cold, starving, lost. The no-kill shelter is directly responsible for that.

Aside from the crime against the pet, think about what stray dogs and cats do to a community. The perpetuation of diseases like parvo virus, lepto spirosis, FELV, FIV, Corona Virus, even rabies. The perpetuation of lyme disease and other tick-bourne pathogens. The perpetuation of parasites, like fleas, coccidia, whipworms, roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. The perpetuation of funguses like ringworm. The anger of a community and its law enforcement as garbage cans are torn apart, rabid animals are seen, feral cat colonies are formed, stray unneutered cats and dogs break down fences, fight, and contribute again and again to the overpopulation of unwanted dogs and cats of an area.

That is what comes from a closed-door policy shelter. Yes, they may have saved 20 perfectly adoptable dogs and found them loving homes. But for that 20, how many did they refuse to take? The 50 to 100 dogs they turned their backs on, the ones that really needed help, were condemned. Ethereally, there is no such thing as a no kill shelter, because that no kill shelter "killed" every dog, every cat, every unwanted litter, etc, that they turned away.

An open door policy shelter like the PCHS accepts all animals. Many pets that come to us are old and sick, and should have been humanely euthanized by their owners. We accept them, and do the job their owners neglected to do. Most everyone can see that a sick, contagious, or suffering dog needs to be mercifully put out of its misery.

The harder decisions involve behavior and mental health. Many pets that come to us have been badly abused, or have been strayed or kenneled for so long that their quality of life is minimal. They have been caged for too long, and are deteriorating mentally. They aren't happy. Keeping an animal like that caged to sooth your conscience because someone can't do the responsible thing, with no thought to the realistic well being of that animal, is ignorant.

The PCHS makes evaluations on all pets in our care. If the evaluation has been made that an animal's mental health is such that the animal has no quality of life potential, that animal may be merciful euthanized, in lieu of living a miserable life, suffering mentally and emotionally.

The PCHS can not in good conscience place an animal in a home when the pet is suspect of dangerous behavior. Aside from the legal ramifications, there is a severe ethical responsibility to act where need be.

As agreed by the Articles of Incorporation, ALL euthanasia decisions are made with full agreement between the shelter manager, and the shelter veterinarian. These difficult decisions are wholly supported by the board of directions, because of the faith we have in the people that make them.

The PCHS realizes that many people have their heart in the right place, but do not have the experience or education to see to it that their heads follow. It takes a lot to be a committed shelter person; a love of animals is not enough. The reality of the problem is often too big and too much for some people to handle.

The PCHS is a wonderful ethical organization that makes a difference in the fight to champion unwanted animals through education, and acting responsibly to the whole situation in a realistic way. We welcome like-minded people to join us in our organization. While we are open minded to new ideas, and to educating novice shelter volunteers, we are very committed to our policies and our way of working, which we truly believe is the best way to approach the epidemic of unwanted animals. It took a lot of experience, a lot of education and information, and a lot of time, care and effort to come to the cerebral place where we are now. We will not be turning back.

14 THINGS THE PCHS DOES FOR YOUR COMMUNITY

1. The PCHS provides Pike County with a Humane Society Police Officer, an agent of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Barry Heim is educated, trained and certified in Act 235 Lethal Weapons Training by Lackawanna College in Scranton, PA. Since Pike County has failed to provide it’s citizen’s with a cruelty officer, the Pike County Humane Society did this on it’s own. Barry Heim has the powers and responsibility of arrest, prosecution and obtaining search warrants if necessary in investigations of animal abuse/neglect. The PCHS pays his salary and bears the burden of all costs associated with cruelty investigations. Your elected officials do not reimburse the PCHS for this most necessary service.

2. The PCHS pursues animal cruelty investigations and prosecutions, such as:

• December 2007 in Greentown: 15 cats, 5 dogs, 3 domestic geese, 6 rabbits, 1 ram, 1 ewe, 1 lamb, 2 goats, 85 domestic rats, 14 guinea pigs and 15 hairless rats (148 animals total) were removed from deplorable neglectful conditions, given veterinary assistance, food and shelter by the PCHS.

• In Birchwood Lakes 27 animals were seized, held and cared for 186 days by the PCHS pending court disposition.

• A separate case in Greentown involving the removal of 432 animals from abusive/neglectful conditions.

• The PCHS cruelty officer assisted the PA state police in the arrest, prosecution, conviction and 90 day jail sentence of Danielle Assante of Birchwood Lakes who starved 7 animals to death in her home.

3. The PCHS is continually providing aid for dogs locked in cars in sweltering summer heat and animals tied out during freezing winter months with inadequate shelter, food or water, and any privately kept animal living in unsanitary or unsafe conditions.

4. The PCHS assists the PA State Police and municipal police 24/7/365 with issues such as: *

• Drunk drivers with dogs in their cars

• Car accidents with dogs in the vehicles

• Accidents involving livestock transportation. (For example, in 2007 the accident between Lords Valley and Milford involving dozens of 4H champion goats. The driver was hospitalized. The PCHS responded to the police’s need for help, rounded up, transported and cared for the goats for over a week.)

• Livestock and farm animal escapes (For example, the horses on the highway in Nov., 2007.)

• “No-knock” searches conducted by the police where animals are involved (For example, in Pine Ridge after the murder in Saw Creek, 2007.)

• Dog fights (For example, the 8-week old Pitbull puppy with crushed glass in his stool.)

• Abandoned animals along the interstate and in the communities

• Animals hit by vehicles

• Vagrants & homeless people with dogs

• Murder/suicide situations where there are domestic animals in the home

*A state dog warden can only respond to calls M-F 8:00 am – 4:30 pm by law. The PCHS responds every day at any hour, assisting the wardens by providing shelter, medical help and food for these animals, and handling these calls completely after official hours, on weekends and holidays and in inclement weather. The PCHS covers the cost for these services, plus the emergency vet bills and receives no reimbursement. The PCHS also assists with dog licenses and rabies vaccination checks, plus transporting oversized animals to the shelter.

If an animal is found dead on the road or in an accident, or if it is suffering and must be euthanized, it costs the shelter 50 cents per pound to cremate the remains. This is required by law.

5. In addition to the veterinary bill for all well checks, first aid, rabies vaccines and spay/neuter, the PCHS has the burden of vehicle costs including insurance, repairs and increased fuel costs for transporting the animals back and forth to the vets.

6. The PCHS provides pick-up of animals from families of domestic violence and provides food, shelter, vet services including spay/neuter and vet transportation for these pets.

7. The PCHS implements Humane Education Programs, such as the program implemented for the 5th grade of all Delaware Valley Schools.

8. The PCHS provides assistance to elderly county residents with animals. Often well-intended pet owners become unable to care for their pets. This includes not bringing them to the vet, not cleaning up after them, being unable to feed them, and being unwilling to put them down when the pets are old and suffering. (For example, an elderly woman in Sagamore Estates kept falling out of her wheel chair. The Shohola fire chief and volunteers responded to help her get back into her wheel chair, and discovered over 25 cats inside in deplorable conditions with feces and urine everywhere.)

9. The PCHS is making every effort possible to maintain the health and welfare of your pets and your children and your environment by doing everything possible to prevent the spread of diseases, fungus, viruses and parasites. The PCHS provides all shelter animals with:
• Vaccinations for upper respiratory contagions
• Bordatella intra-nasal vaccinations for kennel cough
• Frontline applications for fleas, ticks, and subsequently tapeworms and Lyme disease.
• De-worming all animals for ground worms
• Micro-chipping
• Spaying and Neutering
• Other medications as directed by our veterinarian.
• Selling Pike County dog licenses right at the shelter

10. The PCHS handles all rabies suspect cases in Pike County, including:
• The preparation and shipping costs for suspect animals to be sent out to the State Health Laboratory for testing.
• Quarantining, handling and caring for rabies suspect animals. Costly pre-rabies exposure vaccinations are $600.

11. The PCHS provides free information to the public on subjects such as wild animals, fixed income families needing help for their pets, low-cost spay and neutering, licensing, laws, and rabies information. On average, the PCHS receives up to 65 telephone calls per day asking for information.

12. In 2007, the PCHS handled 1500 unwanted pets and permanently placed 626 dogs and cats in good homes. This number increases every year. Before the current board took over ten years ago, the shelter had only ineffectively placed approximately 20 dogs per year and provided no other service.

13. The reason the coyote population is so high and aggressive in our area, is because they have a sustainable perpetual food source. The feral and stray cat population in Pike County is out of control. A breeding pair of cats and their offspring can produce 420,000 cats in seven years. The PCHS works with volunteers addressing the cat situation.

14. Even if you don’t consider yourself an “animal” person, you have to be concerned with neglected and abandoned dogs and cats in our area. Why? Because they are reason you and your family has to deal with an overabundant tick population, lyme disease, other tickborne pathogens, roundworm, whipworm, hookworms, tapeworms, other parasites, ringworm, other funguses, heartworm, rabies, and predators such as coyotes. There is no state agency or local government seat dedicated to these serious health concerns.

THE FACTS

1. The PCHS receives no funding from the United Way because the UW states he PCHS does not provide “people” services.

2. The PCHS receives no monies from the Humane Society of the United States, the American Humane Association, or the ASPCA.

3. The PCHS has no endowments or trust funds to help the shelter survive, as is the case with most area shelters. (For example, Port Jervis/Deerpark Humane Society, Dessin Animal Shelter and Monroe County S.P.C.A.)

4. Pike County has one of the largest feral cat populations in the United States.
Pike County’s feral cat population is extremely diseased and riddled with parasites. This directly affects the health and welfare of all domestic cats. Also, this continues to “feed” the growing dangerous coyote and predator population of Pike County.

5. The PCHS is the ONLY animal shelter in all of Pike County. The PCHS services the whole community with all of their animal related needs. Shelters outside of Pike County have stopped accepting animals from Pike. The county provides no “pound” or emergency animal-situation protocol. No Pike County township provides any necessary animal related services. The PCHS is counted upon to provide every animal service for all of these residents. Therefore the PCHS is the only game in town.

The PCHS is unique:

The PCHS adoption rate for dogs is 87.2 %. The national average is less than 33%.

The PCHS has an open door policy, which means no animal is turned away.

The PCHS has only 4 low paid employees who receive no benefits: no medical, no paid sick days. This includes 3 shelter staff and the cruelty officer. Everything else is done by approximately 15 volunteers.

The physical shelter is clean, friendly, and provides unwanted animals with a caring, safe environment. A two- acre fenced in area with baby pools in the summer creates a socializing space. This interactive haven is where dogs can play and potential adopters can interact with them safely. Our cats are in community “living rooms”, not in cages.

The PCHS is meeting all animal related community needs.

6. It costs the PCHS $5,000 a week or $260,000 to operate. This does not include any expansion or growth, this is just to maintain what we are already doing and already providing. We estimate it would cost the county at least $600,000 a year to do what we do, if we are forced to close for lack of support and funding.

In NY, NJ and most other states, all of the services the PCHS provides are contracted, or at the very least supplemented by townships and county support. However in Pike County, the shelter is forced to fund raise and beg for the means necessary to provide the services the county wouldn’t otherwise have.

The Pike County Commissioners donate $4,000 a year to the PCHS –
That covers five and a half days of operation a year.
That comes out to less than 4 cents per Pike County year-round resident.

This is Forrest, a 4 month old Beagle. He is a special needs baby currently in the care of the Pike County Humane Society. He was born with Rickets and needs a very expensive surgery. Right now without his casts he runs on his elbows because his legs are deformed. Special Dinner to Benefit the PCHS

We have a very special event coming up for us on Thursday, October 13th starting at 6:00.

The Tanti Baci Caffe restaurant will be hosting a sit-down 6-course dinner with proceeds going to the shelter. The restaurant is NY-based but there is also one in Sparta, NJ (Northwestern part of the state).

We will also have live music and a silent auction.

Dinner is $60 per person and will include:

First Course: choice of Butternut squash soup with a hint of fall spices; or Green salad bundles with carrots and tomatoes, with Cranberry Vinaigrette

Second: Very thin sliced eggplant, breaded and backed with ricotta, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil and tomatoes

Third: Penne pasta in our award winning vodka sauce or Linguini is olive oil, garlic and parsley

Fourth: Chicken Rollatino or Chicken breast stuffed with pine nuts, spinach and prosciutto di parma finished with aged balsamic glaze

Please join us this Sunday, Sept 11, from 11-4 at Chuck's Beer on Route 739 in Blooming Grove/Lord's Valley.

The store is located 1/2 mile South of Route 84 near Hemlock Farms.

Chuck's will also be serving up hot dogs and sodas for sale with all proceeds going to the PCHS.

Flea Market and Craft Fair

On Sunday of Labor Day weekend this year, September 4th, we will hold a Flea Market and Craft Fair at the Altec Lansing parking lot from 8:00-2:00.

We will also have vendors selling their own items.

Altec Lansing is on Routes 6/209 in Milford.

If you would like to be a vendor at this event please contact us. We are offering 10x10 spots for only $15 per space.

You can also contribute to our own table where we will be new or gently used selling items.

This Friday the 13th will be a lucky one for us as we are going to have a pet adoption at TNT Kitchens and Bath (www.tntkitchenssite.com) on Routes 6/209 in Milford (between Balch's and Myer the Florist).

We'll be there from 4-7.

Radio station Thunder 102 (www.thunder102.com) will be broadcasting LIVE from the event that evening as well for their weekly Kings in the Kitchen feature.

We will be at the Greentown Agway on Route 507 in Greentown on Saturday, November 26th from 11-3 for a Pet Adoption.

Please come out, check out the animals, talk to the people who run the shelter and even if you don't adopt if you could please support the shelter by making a donation it would help us help the animals.
